Saturday Adventure

Ashland and his dad in the flower field at the market on Sauvie Island.

Ashland is petting (!) sunflowers. Check out his sneakers — we finally found ones that are easy to put on and he doesn’t mind wearing (in fact, he LOVES wearing them)!

Here’s Ashland and I.

Ashland has gotten very good at walking but for some reason he’ll just remain standing where I put him (to my convenience!!) when we are outside.

Riding the cart through various vegetable/fruit patches to get to blueberries and blackberries.

Ashland is totally loving blackberries!

Ashland and Immi can’t stop munching!

And then we found a market that has a little barn full of farm animals. Ashland seems excited about piglets and cute little black pony.

Prunes

Ashland seemed to be a bit constipated these days (probably because he gets most of calories from food and not formula now) so I thought to get him some prunes (it totally *worked* for immi when she was a baby, she got pureed ones) and we happen to find some at the Farmers’ Market! These are totally delicious (I’ve never thought of prunes as “delicious” until I had these! We sampled several varieties and picked brooks prunes) and Ashland likes them a lot too!

Eating

Ashland loves to eat and he always seems happy about eating. Even if it’s completely unexciting menu like peas, squash and sushi rice (rice with bit of rice vinegar and tad of sea salt — I got the idea to do this for him at home because he seems to like sushi a lot).

Painting

When Ashland is done with his bottle (I’ve been giving him 6 oz at a time the past 6 month now, but quite often lately he doesn’t finish it because he would rather eat real food), if I don’t take away the bottle promptly, he’ll start painting with it! I give him lots of credit for creativity but…

He does take his bottle very yummily though when he is eating (drinking?). I’ve offered him sippy cups with water in them a few times but he hasn’t really liked it at all. I haven’t offered him any other milks of any kind yet — I thought I’d wait until he sees his pediatrician for 1 year check-up. After Ashland weened himself off and went 100% formula around 6 months, he really hasn’t looked back. It’s definitely been more expensive, but admittedly it has been so much easier for me.

Saturday

We are at the PSU market and sitting at our usual spot. Ashland is leaning over to see what Immi is doing.

We walked around town for a while and now getting some cheap but yummy conveyor belt sushi. There’s lots of these sushi restaurant all around Portland and it has become our favorite dine-out solution because it’s quite healthy and both Immi and Ashland loves it. Ashland’s favorites are Tamago and Avocado rolls. He is having watermelon now.

We saw our bus leaving as we got to the bus stop and so having to wait 19 minutes for the next one. As it turns out, waiting for a bus in this part of town is completely entertaining for Ashland because there’s live music playing right across the street and lots of people to watch.

Past several days, Ashland has been needier than usual (he doesn’t want me to go out of sight — he is usually fine to be playing with immi in the play room  without me) and having trouble falling a sleep at night (he sleeps fine when he does fall a sleep). We figured he’s teething with the top teeth…but as it turns out top four teeth and and 3rd and 4th teeth on the bottom (he has has 2 teeth on the bottom for some time now) are also coming out! That’s SIX teeth that are trying to come out all at once and it looks really painful!

Toe Muncher!

This morning I woke up to a peculiar feeling. My feet were hanging off the edge of the bed and something was biting on my toes. I rolled to one side and opened one squinty-eye…there was an Ashland grabbing onto my right foot and munching on my toes! Of course this is a daring and ballsy maneuver to try because my socks generally are considered hazardous waste and/or biohazard zones. But Ashland is a fearless liger and toe muncher!

Spaghetti

Ashland is having spaghetti.

I’ve been a lot less restrictive about what Ashland can eat at this stage. When immi was pre-toddler, I followed basic American recommendation of feeding which basically sums up to a quite short list of foods babies can eat. This time, I’m taking more Japanese approach that comes with longer list of foods (I have entire book of what’s appropriate and what’s not instead of a  short list) and philosophy that “if you aren’t allergic to it, you can have it” instead of more American “don’t feed it because you might be allergic”. Of course I still avoid foods that aren’t appropriate like nuts, sesame, honey etc. but so far, Ashland doesn’t seem to have any major food allergies.

Bagel

Ashland loves my special teething bagel I make just for him (a.k.a. Stale Bagle: slice in half, then cut in half, leave them on cooling rack for a day :) ). The bagel keeps him very happy and busy for about 30 minutes! It’s a lot less messier for him to eat than teething biscuits, and they are less sweeter too.

Biscuit

We are sitting outside at the cafe across the street. Immi was very happy to just sit quietly and enjoy fresh air, but Ashland wanted us to keep moving…so we shut him up with a teething biscuit (it’s really stiff and takes him really long time to eat it, it’s to help his growing teeth feel better) :D Now everyone is happy.

Ashland now grabs onto anything to stand up!

Yucky Face and Grumpy Face

I got Ashland some organic *designer* (heh!) baby food designed by a chef even I’ve heard of since I thought variety would be good for him. Well, Ashland wasn’t impressed. Look at this face! I find it so interesting that persons are born knowing how to make a yucky face. I’m glad he likes my rice cereal recipe (dried rice cereal flakes + water!) better.

Ashland gets upset sometimes when the gate is closed. He seems to think it unfair :D

Oh yeah Ashland finally got one tooth!
