Ashland is walking around cautiously on the grass at friends’.
We spent few hours on Hawthorne street enjoying all the festivities of the Street Fair and suddenly realized we hadn’t had much to eat besides donuts all day! Besides, I wanted to sit in AC and cool off for a bit so we entered a grocery store (artificially cool breeze wafting from their door enticed us in!) and had some grocery store sushi. The only highchair they had were being used by someone else, so Ashland is just standing on the regular chair having his meal (his dad is holding onto his shirt in case he wobbles). Amazingly, he stood and ate his sushi happily the entire time we were there!
I’ve had this stacking rings in plain sight for months, but Ashland suddenly took interest in actually stacking the rings a few days ago. He was a bit fumbly then, but he’s already gotten very good at it. He doesn’t stack them by size yet though.
Every time Ashland reaches a ‘milestone’ I can’t help thinking how Immi and Ashland are so completely different from one another. Immi never stacked these rings at this stage in development — it was a bit later that she took interest in it briefly, but at that point, she was already able to stack them in correct order (descending and ascending in size) and seemed to be experimenting with concept of permutations. Same thing with blocks, immi never engaged in such mundane activity as stacking just a few of them. When she did finally stack blocks, she had finesse comparable to adults’ in building a very very tall monument. I’m supposing that they just have a different learning style.
Ashland has short attention span (or maybe Immi’s is abnormally long for her age…) he got bored of stacking already after a few rounds and decided to chuck them beyond the gate. He is pretending to be upset about them being out of reach.
Ashland is playing with the baby blocks. …And to my surprise, he can stick together and stack-up 3 blocks quite easily!
He’s getting better at walking too!
Ashland is playing with the train. He is determined to make it keep going forward, and Miss Monroe is determined NOT to move from her spot.
Ashland loves playing with the kitchen set. He has the right idea about it too for most part (put food in the pot, remove food from the oven, put stuff in the sink…).
I’m finding that “age appropriate” toys I’ve saved for him (6m–12m) to be completely useless because given the option, he would much rather play with Immi’s toys intended for older kids.
Ashland’s granddad who is visiting this weekend offered to get him a “dude” toy but wasn’t sure exactly what. So I suggested this little dump truck made of recycled plastic which I was intending on getting for Ashland at some point.
He loves it of course, it has wheels on. He’ll scoot it, dump out stuff in it, and checks out the wheels on the bottom.
I notice that he plays “pretend” cars with non-car items. Like a piece of french toast — he’ll scoot it around on his table at breakfast as if it were a car.
Ashland is completely smitten by this little soccer ball. I’m worried he is going to make me a soccer mom (hey did you just laugh imagining me driving minivan wearing sneakers and outfit from j-crew?
).
…And there he goes chasing after the ball.
I’m not sure since when Ashland was able to do this, but suddenly, he knows how to play catch! He rolls the ball to me, and then he catches it when I roll it back.
Ashland is having bagles, again. We got him lots of yummy bagels. He definitely prefers these bagels from proper bagel shops far more than those bag-of-bagels from grocery store:D
I imagine that at some point we’ll have to get Ashland some trucks and trains and such, but for now he seems to not mind playing with pink ponies.
…Really happy in fact!
When we were at IKEA the other day, we spotted this big and really cheap rug and thought it was perfect solution for Ashland’s ‘excessive drool ruining carpet’ situation! He seems to like playing on it (because it’s colorful?) and it’s easy to clean and fast to dry
