Ashland is teething again and he woke up a few hours after he went to sleep and seemed to be having trouble falling back asleep so I brought him to bed and rubbed his back until he fell asleep again. …And then I forgot he was there until the morning when I found him sound asleep there.
We just finished having lunch at the Market. It’s really nice in the shade but under the direct sunlight, it’s definitely hot! Ashland just said “Happy!” — he really does seem happy from yummy food (he had waffles and sausages) and hanging out with his dad.
Ashland got really hot and grumpy (I don’t blame him!) in the car and being grumpy made him even hotter, so by the time we got home, he was all sweaty! He is cooling off now with a bottle cold rice milk (which he is guzzling down!).
Lately, Ashland’s favorite spot to fall a sleep is right by the mouse while his daddy’s working on something.
Ashland had his 1 year check-up today (a little late I know…). And he’s doing really well! He’s even gotten bigger slightly beyond his own growth curve. The doctor was impressed with all the things he learned to do: walking (running more like!), stacking 5 blocks, saying some words (his favorite lately is “all done”). He hated having his ears checked and vaccinated. He was so upset that he had tears streaming down his cheeks, which I hardly ever see since he almost never cries
It’s sort of become our unwritten tradition to go get coffee and bagel at Java Mama, a coffee house near the pediatrician’s office after appointments…but we got there only to find it closed (probably permanently!). This was such a shock to us since we’ve known the owner (he’s really nice) and it’s the first coffee house we ever found in Portland when we moved! Anyhow, we drove further and ended up at Tea Thyme and Lavender for afternoon tea. By this time though Ashland fell fast asleep and spent the entire tea time not having treats.
Ashland fast asleep on a pillow. He loves pillows and blankets…though I do still take the pillow out of his crib when he falls asleep.
Ashland is completely asleep in his stroller. He’s probably in food-coma since he had such a large lunch (noodles with lots of chicken and veggies). Because I’m used to how little immi eats, his appetite amuses me. He’s also omnivorous and I haven’t found all that many things he won’t eat (he won’t eat toast for some reason, he loves un-toasted bread though).
It’s about 10 pm here, and Ashland is fast asleep. He goes to sleep around 9pm and wakes up around 8 am. Sometimes he wakes up early in the morning, but I just have to find his pacifier (he’s usually lost it by then) and he goes back to sleep.
We’ve noticed that Ashland is really interested in (and quite good at!) imitating. He has imitated a few words, and some musical rhythms (it’s good enough to be recognizable sometimes now). He also actively engages in interactive play — he tries to help out immi with her project (usually involving organizing smaller objects into various containers), and he initiates playing Tug-of-war. He has also learned to tantalize Miss Monroe with a shoe lace — this makes Miss Monroe go nuts over catching the string’s end and Ashland very happy (I don’t let Ashland play like this with Oskar because he has his front claws intact, I think that the chance of accidental scratch is too high…).
Also, I think that he is starting to recognize some words. When I say “No, Ashland!!” (which is really often…), he looks at me and shakes his head side ways. And when I asked him if it was time to change his diapers, he promptly crawled over to the diaper basket to grab a changing mat.
It’s been drizzly out often lately. Ashland actually loves strolling on drizzly days — he would stick his toes out or lean forward (in the other 3 point harness stroller) to catch some sprinkles! The rain isn’t so bad that you’ll really get wet if you walked outside for few minutes but I finally pulled out the rain cover attachment for the stroller (which we never had use for in Reston!) because it was also slightly chilly out. He fell asleep during the walk home. Now that I’m seeing the photo, it’s a bit creepy, but that just might be because we’ve been watching a lot of murder mystery type shows.
Ashland taking a nap. He wiggled out his left arm out of his shirt! Ashland LOVES blankets, and refuses to go to sleep without out it often. It is unfortunately a hazard, so I keep a close eye on him and/or take it away when he falls asleep.
Ashland woke up from his cat nap and now pulling on Oskar’s tail.
