I’ve had this stacking rings in plain sight for months, but Ashland suddenly took interest in actually stacking the rings a few days ago. He was a bit fumbly then, but he’s already gotten very good at it. He doesn’t stack them by size yet though.
Every time Ashland reaches a ‘milestone’ I can’t help thinking how Immi and Ashland are so completely different from one another. Immi never stacked these rings at this stage in development — it was a bit later that she took interest in it briefly, but at that point, she was already able to stack them in correct order (descending and ascending in size) and seemed to be experimenting with concept of permutations. Same thing with blocks, immi never engaged in such mundane activity as stacking just a few of them. When she did finally stack blocks, she had finesse comparable to adults’ in building a very very tall monument. I’m supposing that they just have a different learning style.
Ashland has short attention span (or maybe Immi’s is abnormally long for her age…) he got bored of stacking already after a few rounds and decided to chuck them beyond the gate. He is pretending to be upset about them being out of reach.
Ashland seemed bored with his infant toys, so I got out some of immi’s toys that had been stashed away.
Ashland seems to love anything with wheels and wheels on anything. I don’t know if it’s a “boy thing” or an “ashland thing”.
Ashland got up and crawled very proficiently across the room to get Immi’s little bag of Cheddar Bunnies. I haven’t seen him do it since though, he gets around quite fast, but using mixed technique, I get the impression that he is really trying to stand up and walk.
Ashland is playing with his sister’s Teapot Palace and Littlest Pet Shop animals. He is putting the animal figurines in the various places of the palace. I think that he is doing this because he sees immi doing this all day.
I’ve noticed that Ashland seems to learn by watching and imitating. If I show him a feature on a toy that I don’t see him using, he’ll try it immediately. This is completely amusing to me because immi hardly ever imitates. With immi, if I show her how to paint (dip the brush in the water, and then paint, and then draw on the paper) she won’t do that — instead she dreams up 10 different ways to put paint on the paper with or with out the brush (put paint on the brush and sprinkle on the page, squeeze water out of the brush on to the painted surface, pour onto page directly from the palette…). They have such different learning styles!
I saw Ashland get really happy when he heard a rock guitar music which was the end credit of a movie we finished watching…and I thought to get this toy out (it was immi’s from her grandmom). And look!, he is a natural, he must have been a rocker in his previous life or something.
Ashland’s sister spoils him all day. He is burried in toys because Immi keeps bringing him more.
Hi! Do you remember this monkey you got for immi when she was little?? Well, now Ashland is enjoying him a whole lot. He loves the tiny ribbons on his head for hair, crinkling his cellophane ears, and chewing on textured paws.

[For those of you who don't know, Auntie Junko moved back to Japan this week. And she will be there for now, but who knows where she'll be going next!!] Anyway, we received the package you sent us full of souvenir from exotic places you just traveled back from, and we are totally enjoying them! (I’m keeping the purse safe for immi until summer when the weather will be much better for it!).
(coffee, tea, cane sugar, frankincense, incense, vanilla beans, saffron…in short, all my favorite things!)

The above photo doesn’t do justice to the huge amount of gorgeous saffron so here’s one out of the plastic. It smells so good, I wish I could share scent in a photo!

Usually very mild tempered angelic Ashland was really grumpy this morning. Only thing that helped him is gnawing on things, so I’m assuming he being a teething monster!

Ashland’s socks aren’t on correctly because he discovered his feet recently and has been pulling on his socks.

…I’ll just add here that I was prepared for him to be grumpy all day, but he was totally back to his normal self by afternoon!
Starting Ashland early on chocolate!

Seriously, it’s a teething (chocolate part is rubbery and sterilizable) toy Obaachan brought for him from Japan:) I got it out for Ashland because he really likes to chew on my finger and it actually hurts after a while. Luckily, he seems to enjoy chewing on the chocolate just as much.
